Senior Research Engineer-Network Security

The Advanced Threat Research team is seeking a senior research engineer in the area of networks. The team is a small, multi-purpose group tasked with researching, designing, and prototyping new detection and mitigation techniques for our products. Tasks vary from reverse engineering, protocol analysis, literature review, and efficacy-focused design and development.


The role necessitates a wealth of experience in network-based threats and how to mitigate them. The ideal candidate will be deeply familiar with fundamentals at each layer of the network stack.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Your First Six Months:

  • Become familiarized with product lines & efficacy capabilities
  • Collect and review incoming data from product teams and contribute to efficacy measurement
  • Assist with model performance review


Six to Twelve Months and Beyond:

  • Contribute to existing product efficacy (e.g., network destination reputations)
  • Propose innovative solutions / heuristics to bolster internal threat intelligence or enhance product efficacy
  • Contribute to the design and development of the aforementioned projects
  • Work with engineering teams across the broader OpenText Webroot & Carbonite organizations to assess security & detection capabilities of the associated products

Projects grow and from ideation to proof-of-concept very quickly, so the candidate should be prepared to work in a brisk-paced research environment. The candidate’s success on the team depends on the drive to understand, the desire to learn, and the ability to convert theoretical heuristics into practical technologies.

Skills & Experience:


  • 5+ years of total experience in network security development roles, threat hunting, and/or security research; or equivalent experience and an advanced degree in Computer Science or Cybersecurity
  • Is deeply familiar with the threat landscape (botnets, C2, DGAs, etc.) and can speak to trends and challenges in mitigating network-based threats; the ideal candidate has actively contributed to new techniques on detecting these threats
  • Identifies, reads, and interprets packets and protocol messages for a wide range of common Internet protocols (using tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump) including:
    • TCP/UDP/IP
    • SSL/TLS
  • Generates custom-crafted packets using scapy or similar frameworks
  • Performs data analysis to uncover unknown and novel security threats through network vectored exploitation, protocol design and usage errors, etc.
  • Formal modeling experience (e.g., ProVerif or TLA+) is a huge plus, but not required
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills are required; this role interfaces directly with stakeholders to discuss threats and promote new techniques
