The Opportunity:


The role Cloud Application Engineer – Apigee and Data Services will be responsible to help build a centralized backing services practice across OpenText. Your focus will primarily be on Apigee, but may be expanded to include other technologies such as RabbitMQ, Redis, and Apache Solr.  You will be joining a new team that is being formed to support these technologies across OpenText. You will be responsible for working with application teams to build standard backing services patterns.   This would include highly available design, scaling, integration with the underlying IaaS (VMware, AWS, GCP, Azure) and PaaS (Cloud Foundry, K8s, Anthos), availability and performance monitoring, service upgrades, and data backup and recovery. You'll be working on non-production and production environments. The best person for this role is someone that has a collaborative spirit - in our world, it’s not about being a hero and having all the answers, it’s about sometimes saying "I don't know" and working on finding solutions rather than starting with an assumption. The team needs someone who can ask questions, learn from others and turn chaos into order.

You are great at:

  • Building repeatable application technology design patterns
  • Automating patterns for application deployments, upgrades, and maintenance using tools such as Ansible
  • Learning new technology on your own or in conjunction with an online learning platform
  • Working in collaboration with other application teams, including gathering requirements and documenting the solution
  • Understanding application service considerations when deploying workloads on bare metal, VMs, or containers
  • Understanding API technology and Service-Oriented Architecture
  • Understanding availability and performance monitoring tools and concepts


Overall Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, maintain and support Apigee Edge infrastructure
  • Support and maintain Apigee X deployments
  • Automate manual tasks that are currently being performed related to operating the Apigee Edge environments
  • Support DR (Disaster Recovery) planning and exercises to ensure that the team is fully prepared in the event of a catastrophe
  • Lead Capacity Planning and Management activities to ensure that the Apigee platform will be able to handle current and additional transactions in the future
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with the client application teams to understand their business needs and requirements for the Apigee Platform
  • Mentor other Engineers as needed to acquire Apigee knowledge and platform management skills
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Apigee Edge, including deployments, upgrades, and maintenance tasks
  • Help new client application teams with Apigee usage, educating teams on Apigee capabilities, and helping teams to adopt new features
  • Respond to service requests meeting our team OLAs
  • Take ownership and accountability for the incident resolution process
  • Lead root cause analysis session to understand Production issues and come up with solutions that will prevent them from happening in the future
  • Act as a technical liaison with other teams to evaluate and report bugs
  • Participate in training and information sharing activities
  • Act as backup for other team members when necessary
  • May require shift work
  • On-call rotation is required, as 7x24x365 support is required
  • The role may be expanded to include support of other technologies such as RabbitMQ, Redis, and Apache Solr


What It Takes:

  • Strong troubleshooting skills related to API Management and Gateway
  • Strong working knowledge of Apigee Edge for Private Cloud infrastructure, configurations, and maintenance routines, including ability to explain each Apigee component and how they interact
  • 2+ years of Apigee Edge for Private Cloud operations experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering or related
  • Should have at least 5 years of Information technology experience
  • Basic understanding of Cassandra operations
  • Basic Knowledge of private and public cloud infrastructure platforms (VMware/AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Linux operating system with a focus on file system types and IO schedulers, memory management, and bash scripting
  • Should be extremely detail oriented and meticulous
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment working on projects against strict deadlines
  • Should have a Research & Development mentality
  • Strong understanding of ITIL principles, certification is a plus
  • Diagnosing & troubleshooting user facing service incidents & outages
  • Experience with automation using Ansible and Terraform
  • Experience with CICD Tools (GitLab, Artifactory, etc.)
  • Previous experience supporting an enterprise environment, and/or with supporting high volume API solutions
  • Ability to work remotely, and experience working with team members located in various regions globally


Additional Value-Added Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge in Redis, RabbitMQ, and/or Apache Solr
  • Application clustering / load balancing concepts
  • Understanding network topologies and common network protocols and services (DNS, HTTP(S), SSH, FTP, SMTP, DHCP, TCP, IP etc…)
  • Experience monitoring cloud services with Dynatrace, New Relic, Zabbix, Nagios, BMC or any HPE tools
  • Awareness and insight into industry trends (technology, methods and tooling)
  • Great communication, highly engaged and motivated, and willing to go the extra mile to get things done
