Overview of Business Function 


OpenText Cloud Operations is responsible for the global operations and delivery of our Open Text cloud services to clients in multiple industries. Our offerings range from shared, multitenant SaaS offerings to Managed Services supporting Enterprise Clients and are hosted on a variety of infrastructure platforms. The Cloud Operations team is responsible for defining the technical platform and partnering with our engineering and security teams to deliver solutions using a DevSecOps approach.  


The Opportunity:


The role Lead Cloud Application Engineer – Backing Services will be responsible to help build a centralized backing services practice across OpenText. Your focus will be on technologies such as Kafka, Elasticsearch, and Cassandra.  You will be joining a newly formed team who will be supporting these technologies. You will be responsible for working with application teams to build standard backing services patterns.   This would include highly available design, scaling, integration with the underlying IaaS (VMware, AWS, GCP, Azure) and PaaS (Cloud Foundry, K8s, Anthos), availability and performance monitoring, service upgrades, and data backup and recovery. You'll be working on non-production and production environments.


You are great at:


  • Building repeatable application technology design patterns
  • Automating patterns for application deployments, upgrades, and maintenance using tools such as Ansible
  • Learning new technology on your own or in conjunction with an online learning platform
  • Working in collaboration with other application teams, including gathering requirements and documenting the solution
  • Understanding application service considerations when deploying workloads on bare metal, VMs, or containers
  • Understanding data streaming and NoSQL technology
  • Understanding availability and performance monitoring tools and concepts


Overall Responsibilities:


  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Kafka, helping with topic creation and management, owning and managing the Kafka Schema Registry, helping new teams with Kafka usage, educating teams on Kafka capabilities, and helping teams to adopt new features
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Elasticsearch, helping with index creation and lifecycle management, shard scaling, index rollover and rollup strategies and performance tuning
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Cassandra, helping with node sizing, datacenter and rack topology, replication factor, quorum configuration and driving settings
  • Respond to service requests meeting our team OLAs
  • Take ownership and accountability for the incident resolution process
  • Act as a technical liaison with other teams to evaluate and report bugs
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with team members and other teams, including Professional Services and Product Development
  • Participate in training and information sharing activities
  • Act as backup for other team members when necessary
  • May require shift workOn-call rotation is required, as 7x24x365 support is required


What It Takes:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering or related
  • Kafka operations experience
  • Elasticsearch operations experience
  • Working knowledge of Kafka concepts such as topics, partitions, replication factor, offsets, consumers and producers
  • Working knowledge of Elasticsearch concepts such as roles, shards, replicas, indexes, index patterns, index lifecycle management, and aliases
  • Basic understanding of Cassandra operations
  • Basic Knowledge of private and public cloud infrastructure platforms (VMware/AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Linux operating system with a focus on file system types and IO schedulers, memory management, bash scripting,
  • Basic understanding of Java memory management including garbage collection and available GC methods
  • Should have a Research & Development Mentality
  • Strong understanding of ITIL principles, certification is a plus.
  • Diagnosing & troubleshooting user facing service incidents & outages


Additional Value-Added Qualifications:


  • Application clustering / load balancing concepts
  • Understanding network topologies and common network protocols and services (DNS, HTTP(S), SSH, FTP, SMTP, DHCP, TCP, IP etc…)
  • Experience monitoring cloud services with Dynatrace, New Relic, Zabbix, Nagios, BMC or any HPE tools
  • Awareness and insight into industry trends (technology, methods and tooling)
