The Opportunity:

The Manager of Apigee and Data Services will be responsible to help build a centralized services practice across OpenText. As part of the larger Cloud Operations team reporting to the Director of Backing Services, your focus will be to drive success delivering technologies such as Apigee, RabbitMQ, Redis, and Apache Solr to the OpenText application teams.  You will be helping to form a new team that is being created to support these technologies and taking on responsibility to manage this team.

We are looking for an objectives-driven, hands-on leader who is detail-oriented, efficient, and a talented innovator. You will demonstrate an exceptional level of team building and the intuition to recognize and manage the varying elements of project and personnel demands that drive a successful technology company forward.  You have the ability to make sound decisions after carefully gathering and evaluating the facts.

Your team will be responsible for working with OpenText application teams to build standard patterns for the technologies that we are supporting.   This would include highly available design, scaling, integration with the underlying IaaS (VMware, AWS, GCP, Azure) and PaaS (Cloud Foundry, K8s, Anthos), availability and performance monitoring, service upgrades, and data backup and recovery. You'll be working on non-production and production environments.

This role would be a great fit for someone with creative and innovative problem-solving skills, ability to develop and implement solutions that operate at scale, and effectively lead a team to deliver these services efficiently and reliably. You are great at:

  • Leadership, communication, and attention to detail
  • Building repeatable application technology design patterns
  • Automating patterns for application deployments, upgrades, and maintenance using tools such as Ansible
  • Learning new technology on your own or in conjunction with an online learning platform
  • Working in collaboration with other application teams, including gathering requirements and documenting the solution
  • Understanding application service considerations when deploying workloads on bare metal, VMs, or containers
  • Understanding API technology and Service-Oriented Architecture
  • Understanding availability and performance monitoring tools and concepts

 

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of site reliability engineers that support the Apigee, RabbitMQ, Redis, and Solr installations for OpenText
  • Design, build, maintain and support Apigee Edge, RabbitMQ, Redis, and Solr infrastructure
  • Support and maintain Apigee X deployments
  • Lead the team to develop an automated deployment / maintenance leveraging technologies such as Terraform and Ansible
  • Automate manual tasks that are currently being performed related to operating these environments
  • Manage the deployment and maintenance of OpenText core agents that are required on hosts that support our services to ensure full compliance
  • Ensure security policies are adhered to
  • Provide technical thought leadership to internal and external contacts
  • Recruit, hire, and train staff; foster a successful and positive team environment
  • Ensure that proper monitoring and alerting is in place on all installations of our services, along with defined response procedures
  • Support DR (Disaster Recovery) planning and exercises to ensure that the team is fully prepared in the event of a catastrophe
  • Lead capacity planning and management activities to ensure that the services will be able to handle current and additional transactions in the future
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with the client application teams to understand their business needs and requirements for our services
  • Mentor team members as needed to acquire knowledge and skills related to the services that the team is supporting
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Apigee, RabbitMQ, Redis, and Solr, including deployments, upgrades, and maintenance tasks
  • Help new client application teams with usage of our services, educating them on capabilities, and helping teams to adopt new features
  • Respond to service requests meeting our team OLAs
  • Take ownership and accountability for the incident resolution process; participate and lead incident calls when necessary
  • Lead root cause analysis session to understand Production issues and come up with solutions that will prevent them from happening in the future
  • Manage the asset management process for hosts used by our services to ensure complete and accurate accounting of our inventory
  • Act as a technical liaison with other teams to evaluate and report bugs
  • Participate in training and information sharing activities
  • May require shift work
  • On-call escalation support is required, as 7x24x365 on-call support by the team is required

 

What It Takes:

  • 4+ years of Manager experience in Enterprise Operations / IT
  • 2+ years of Apigee Edge for Private Cloud operations experience
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to provide technical representation of issues and ideas
  • Must be able to guide teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues
  • Strong management / troubleshooting skills related to API Management and Gateway
  • Strong working knowledge of Apigee Edge for Private Cloud infrastructure, configurations, and maintenance routines, including ability to explain each Apigee component and how they interact
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering or related
  • Should have at least 5 years of Information technology experience
  • Basic understanding of Cassandra operations
  • Basic Knowledge of private and public cloud infrastructure platforms (VMware/AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Linux operating system with a focus on file system types and IO schedulers, memory management, and bash scripting
  • Should be extremely detail oriented and meticulous
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment working on projects against strict deadlines
  • Should have a Research & Development mentality
  • Strong understanding of ITIL principles, certification is a plus
  • Diagnosing & troubleshooting user facing service incidents & outages
  • Experience with automation using Ansible and Terraform
  • Experience with CICD Tools (GitLab, Artifactory, etc.)
  • Previous experience supporting an enterprise environment, and/or with supporting high volume API solutions
  • Ability to work remotely, and experience working with team members located in various regions globally

 

Additional Value-Added Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge in Redis, RabbitMQ, and/or Apache Solr or other distributed systems
  • Application clustering / load balancing concepts
  • Understanding network topologies and common network protocols and services (DNS, HTTP(S), SSH, FTP, SMTP, DHCP, TCP, IP etc…)
  • Experience monitoring cloud services with Dynatrace, New Relic, Zabbix, Nagios, BMC or any HPE tools
  • Awareness and insight into industry trends (technology, methods and tooling)
  • Great communication, highly engaged and motivated, and willing to go the extra mile to get things done
