Overview of Business Function


OpenText Cloud Operations is responsible for the global operations and delivery of our Open Text cloud services to clients in multiple industries. Our offerings range from shared, multitenant SaaS offerings to Managed Services supporting Enterprise Clients and are hosted on a variety of infrastructure platforms. The Cloud Operations team is responsible for defining the technical platform and partnering with our engineering and security teams to deliver solutions using a DevSecOps approach.


The Opportunity


The role Sr. Cloud Database Administrator – will be responsible to help maintain and grow over 700 Sybase databases supporting the XDDS application across multiple OpenText datacenters. Your focus will be on maintaining existing systems as well as participating in and leading upgrades for those databases.  You will be joining a two person team who currrently support these systems. You will be responsible for working with development and application teams to resolve issues and identifying areas of improvement.   This would include highly available design, scaling, integration with the underlying XDDS application, availability and performance monitoring, service upgrades, and data backup and recovery. You'll be working on non-production and production environments. The best person for this role is someone that has a collaborative spirit - in our world, it’s not about being a hero and having all the answers, it’s about sometimes saying "I don't know" and working on finding solutions rather than starting with an assumption. The team needs someone who can ask questions, learn from others and turn chaos into order.

You are great at:


  • Help maintain and operate a global Sybase database service practice across OpenText. Your focus will be on keeping those systems operating at peak capacity and ensure a 99.999 uptime metric. 
  • You will be responsible for working with application teams during quarterly maintenance windows to perform patching and password changes.   This would include performing schedule database upgrades during those windows.
  • You'll be working on non-production and production environments.
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Sybase ASE, helping with topic creation and management, owning and managing the Sybase ASE installations, helping Product Development teams qualify new Sybase ASE releases, educating teams on new Sybase ASE capabilities, and helping teams to adopt new features
  • Implement best practices and operate environments for Sybase ASE, helping with index creation and lifecycle management, and performance tuning
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with team members and other teams, including Professional Services and Product Development
  • Act as backup for other team members when necessary
  • May require shift work; On-call rotation is required, as 7x24x365 support is required


What it takes:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering or related
  • Should have at least 10+ years of Information technology experience.
  • 10+ years of Sybase ASE operations experience.
  • Working knowledge of Sybase ASE concepts such as backups, performance tuning, creating databases, database partitioning.
  • Experience using Sybase ASE 15.7 / 16.x
  • Working knowledge of Sybase Replication technologies such as MSA, replication error diagnosis and corrective actions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Linux operating system with a focus on scripting
  • Intermediate understanding of NetBackup procedures
  • Experience on Oracle Enterprise Edition, Oracle MySQL, and Postgresql is a plus
  • Familiarity with Netbackup and/or Network backup software
