Principal IT Software Engineer

Req id:  36952

Waterloo, ON, CA Richmond Hill, ON, CA

Micro Focus (now OpenText) is one of the world’s largest enterprise software providers. We deliver mission-critical technology and supporting services that help thousands of customers worldwide manage core IT elements of their business so they can run and transform—at the same time.

The Opportunity
Heritage Micro Focus, Now OpenText is a $3 billion global business with over 300 products and 40,000 customers. We have a curious and open-minded culture, and our aim is to deliver a customer experience that delights at all touchpoints. We don’t always get it right, but we learn and try again.
We are looking for a Principal Site Reliability Engineer who enjoys problem-solving and who has the motivation to learn and constantly improve our processes and capabilities. You will have extensive knowledge and expertise in Cloud Transformation and cloud technologies and understand how to help bring cross-functional teams together to deliver and scale exceptional experience outcomes for both internal and external customers. We are looking for an individual to help fundamentally shift our cloud capability and engagement model across the group. With an extensive product, customer, tooling, and engineering footprint you can expect to continually learn at Heritage Micro Focus, developing new skills from a variety of experiences. Furthermore, we are entirely flexible where you work in your country or state be it at home, in one of our offices or other space. You decide how you want to work and, with your teammates, how you want to collaborate.
The Principal Site Reliability Engineer is a new role at an exciting time for Micro Focus as we seek to scale and optimize our internal and external processes, transforming key services to the cloud and delivering a customer experience that delights across all touch points. The initial focus will be on maturing our Software Factory, SaaS fulfillment and DevSecOps continuous deployment delivery capabilities.
You are endlessly curious and love delving into the nitty-gritty of a problem. You have a thirst for finding simple solutions to complex problems.  You work collaboratively across teams and clients to ideate best-in-class experiences and bring them to life, ensuring that results are tangible and measurable.
Working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and high-energy environment, you thrive in knowing that you are making a material impact to the growth and direction of the company and on the experience of our customers.

What It Takes:

•    Apply problem-solving and structural thinking skills to solve ambiguous business issues or challenges, sometimes with limited information. Simplify complexity and help lead others to develop the same process of thinking.

•    A natural collaborator, working with other engineering and design teams to consistently deliver great end-to-end customer experience across stages, channels, and other touchpoints in the customer journey.

•    Different from other cloud engineers, the role of Principal Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is a leadership role that guides staff to ensure that the SRE group completes projects on time and within budget.

•    Key responsibilities of the Principal SRE include Planning engineering strategies for Micro Focus now OpenText; managing SRE squads in tasks like research and design; determining department goals and creating implementation plans; providing expert advice to other engineers; creating and managing engineering budgets; and negotiating contracts with vendors.

•    The Principal Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) will design and build the tools, frameworks, systems, and processes that hMF uses to build, integrate, deploy, scale, and manage their Enterprise software products and services.

•    The Principal SRE's main role is to keep the platforms that our 40,000 customers use running smoothly and efficiently. We build powerful automation that impacts everything from development and testing through to production deployment, scaling, monitoring, and alerting. The SRE squads leverage cutting-edge technologies such as Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, Istio, Jenkins, and Spinnaker.

•    Help ensure the cloud function is a visible and trusted partner that delivers a uniform, consistent relationship model that is acknowledged to deliver value.

•    An advocate for change that delivers greater customer centricity and customer outcomes.

•    Ensure that baseline data is available prior to implementing change so that metrics for improvement can be designed and tracked over time to measure success.

You Are Great At:
•    We’re looking for someone who has a start-up mentality, and who is excited to move fast, innovate, and challenge assumptions.
•    The successful candidate will have a good balance of head-in-the-clouds and feet-on-the-ground pragmatic, focused on a simplification approach, and who can lead by example.
•    Someone who approaches problems with curiosity for a best practice solution, leveraging market best practice views for standardization.
•    Senior SRE must innovate to find solutions for their group's individual projects. Principal SRE reviews projects across labs and departments to create new theories and determine strategies that others in the field can use.
•    Senior SRE leads projects and teams, so they must delegate tasks and evaluate performance. Principal SRE uses other leadership skills, such as strategizing, motivating, and ensuring all teams receive the appropriate information and guidance.
•    Proven experience in transforming businesses from on-premise hosting to public cloud, preferably using AWS and related tooling and Agile methodologies.
•    Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure certified DevOps Developer, Solutions Architect, and Cyber Security. Proven experience using Terraform to deliver infrastructure, applications, and services as code on cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure.
•    Proven experience in delivering IaaS and PaaS solutions as “Infrastructure as Code” using Terraform, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager, Chef, Puppet, and similar technologies.
•    Expert in Microservices Architecture which makes applications easier to scale and faster to develop, enabling innovation and accelerating time-to-market for new features.
•    Expert with Docker and container orchestration systems such as EKS, K8s, Docker Swarm, etc. Proving experience in deploying and managing large, containerized workloads in AWS (ECS and EKS).
•    Site reliability engineers will also have to add automation for improved collaborative response in real-time, besides updating documentation, runbook tools, and modules to ready teams for incidents. Experience in designing and implementing CI/CD systems.
•    Strong experience with Serverless technologies including Serverless Spark, Lambda, and DynamoDB. Proficient in several programming languages: Python, Golang, Bash, Ruby, and Java. Proven experience with various image bakery tools both in public and private clouds: Packer, AWS Image Builder, and Azure Image Bakery.
•    Experience with distributed storage technologies like NFS, HDFS, Ceph, and S3 as well as dynamic resource management frameworks (Mesos, Kubernetes, Yarn).
•    Proven experience in Technical Leadership in delivering innovative solutions able to collaborate with business leaders in building and running sustainable production systems, which can evolve and adapt to changes in a global business environment.
•    Energy, focus, assertiveness, and diplomacy: Knowing when to push an agenda and when to let a situation develop, rest, or advance.
•    Highly developed communication skills: Ability and comfort with working at executive levels.
