Location: Boston, MA OR Waterloo, ON

The Role 

We are looking for experienced and motivated candidate for a Principal Software Engineer in the Engineering department.This position involves being part of a dynamic team environment responsible for designing, developing, and supporting software solutions to meet business requirements in the area Consumer and SMB go-to-market channels.  


Specific Objectives and Responsibilities 


Your First Six Months: 

  • Get a “lay of the land:” gain familiarity with Carbonite culture and organization. 

  • Build a solid understanding of the engineering team code base, technical infrastructure, and development practices. 

  • Participate in the team’s Scrum development process. 

  • Begin to take technical leadership in areas where it is needed 

Six to Twelve Months and Beyond: 

  • Actively contribute to features under development, such as developing user-facing applications using Vue.js, Angular.JS, ASP.Net, building modular and reusable components and libraries, and optimizing application for performance 

  • Work closely with both developers and testers in an integrated team to deliver shippable software that meets customer expectations and supports the business's goals  

  • Implementing automated testing integrated into development and maintenance workflows 

  • Keeping an eye on security updates and issues found with Vue.js and all project dependencies 

  • Bring a fresh perspective to the table and make meaningful suggestions for increasing the quality of our code, technical infrastructure and architecture. 

  • Drive the continued development and production of other team members by Proposing any upgrades and updates necessary for keeping up with modern security and development best practices

You will be a member of a team of developers working with many technologies.  To be successful you will have to be collaborative and work with others.  You also must be willing to adapt to changing conditions, as the work that enters this team is fluid and often requires changes of direction to meet the business needs.  As a principal software engineer you will be looked upon for guidance and mentorship of more junior developers.

  • Highly autonomous and able to independently identify high value projects and drive them completion

  • Having and being able to articulate/defend an informed opinion on important topics 


Skills & Experience: 


  • A Bachelor’s degree, College diploma or equivalent experience 

  • 4+ years of experience architecting, designing, developing, and implementing cloud solutions on AWS or Microsoft Azure platforms 

  • Experience working with OpenStack, Linux/UNIX, Rackspace and Docker  

  • Experience with both consuming and designing RESTful APIs 

  • Experience developing software professionally in C# .Net  

  • Database experience, including knowledge of SQL and NoSQL, and related data stores such as Postgres. 

  • Strong awareness of networking and internet protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP and distributed networks 

  • Experience in several of the following areas: database architecture, ETL, business intelligence, big data, machine learning, advanced analytics 

  • Strive for continuous improvement and build continuous integration, continuous development, and constant deployment pipeline (CI/CD Pipeline) 

  • Understanding of server-side rendering and its benefits and use cases 

  • Knowledge of functional programming and object-oriented programming paradigms 

  • Ability to write efficient, secure, well-documented, and clean code 

  • Successfully led and delivered 2 or more cloud based services/ecommerce projects using Agile/Scrum model with shorter release cycles 

  • Experience with Multi-threaded programming 

  • Fluent in core computer science concepts, algorithms, and patterns 

  • 6 years of experience reviewing, porting, and integrating third-party code, and using application frameworks 

  • Experience developing for distributed microservices architectures 

  • Experience designing for high availability, scalability and low latency 

  • Easily works collaboratively and is keen to take ownership of projects and mentor more junior team members 

  • You are an excellent communicator 

  • You take pride in your work 

  • You believe in building a great customer experience 

  • You believe in ownership and accountability
