Hardware Engineer

This role will be responsible for the design, development, and support of hardware products for our Tableau Forensic product line. Tableau Forensic products are custom, dedicated purpose, embedded electronic hardware systems that are used to acquire, triage, and analyze digital evidence in a wide array of investigative environments, including law enforcement and enterprise.


This full-time position will be located at the OpenText Tableau Forensic facility in Waukesha, Wisconsin.


You are good at:

  • Dynamically interacting with stakeholders (other engineers, product managers, project managers, etc.) to efficiently complete hardware development tasks to drive on-time delivery of high-quality features and products that meet stated requirements.
  • Hardware design of embedded computer systems, including hardware architecture, schematic capture, bill-of-materials creation/management, and PCB design.
  • Collaborating with software engineers to ensure the hardware design meets the requirements of the overall system architecture.
  • Developing and executing detailed verification test plans to ensure the designed hardware meets all functional, regulatory compliance, and quality requirements.
  • Mitigating issues with existing designs, including hardware bug characterization/resolution and qualification of replacements for end-of-life components.
  • Implementing design changes using a product lifecycle management process, including formal change orders and associated documentation updates.
  • Overseeing test equipment, including maintenance, repairs, and calibration (in conjunction with third party, as needed).
  • Contributing to detailed project planning by defining/estimating required tasks, considering task interdependencies, and identifying key project risks and their impacts.
  • Understanding the needs and use cases of our digital forensics customer base to drive meaningful new features and product concepts into our portfolio.
  • Fostering a culture of continuous improvement to maximize design process efficiency and product quality.


What it takes:

  • Understanding of computer architectures, including complex microprocessors and their associated peripheral and memory sub-systems.
  • Experience designing electronic product schematics in a modern CAD tool.
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to proactively learn new technologies with a focus on practical application to commercial products.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish long-term, complex objectives.
  • Ability to manage multiple, often competing, priorities and tasks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.


  • Design of electronic based commercial hardware products for two years or more.
  • PCB design using a modern CAD tool.
  • Familiarity with electronic signal integrity and timing requirements and how to measure/analyze them.
  • Thermal design/analysis, including determination of heatsink need, use of simulation tools to ensure initial design success, and empirical measurements to validate actual thermal performance.
  • Analog design concepts, including point-of-load power supply design/implementation.
  • Experience with common digital media/storage technologies and interfaces, such as USB, PCIe, Thunderbolt, SAS, and SATA.
  • Mechanical design using a modern CAD tool, and awareness of mechanical enclosure fabrication methods.
  • Electronic product manufacturing collaboration/knowledge, including design for manufacturability and design for assembly concepts and component lifecycle analysis and issue mitigation techniques.
  • Familiarity with common regulatory compliance standards and their impacts on the hardware design process (RoHS, REACH, CE, FCC, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and Scrum principals.
